Today the puppies are four weeks old. They are still nursing ... when their mother, Sieben, lets them. She seems to be growing less enthusiastic about providing on-demand table-side service for eight hungry little ones. She is spending less time in the litter box and more time resuming her normal activities. The pups are still getting plenty of nutrition as they began eating solid (well ... semi-solid) food this week. I am using, for the first time. a weaning formula called 2nd Stage. I like it because it is easy to use. I mix it with Esbilac and Eukanuba puppy kibble. The little ones seem to like it as evidenced by the speed with which they lap it until it is all gone.
Puppies had their second worming this week. They don't even seem to know they are being medicated. Apparently the stuff tastes pretty good ... . No ill effects from the worming so it is all good
I have started basic training. I use baby food chicken (in the little jars) to imprint the concept of "come". I also use the baby food for rudimentary scent or tracking training. The pups are doing well and actually seem to enjoy their training sessions...or maybe it's just the baby food.
Of course puppies do not have the muscle control to be REALLY potty trained until they are 3 - 4 months old. However, over the years I have found that when they are about 3 weeks old they can be introduced to paper training. Their instinctual inclination to have clean quarters seems to kick in, and they begin to actually seek out the newspaper for potty purposes. Certainly not fail proof at this age, and it is a good beginning toward being the perfectly house-trained pet.
